Where do you go to get your wow outfits? The answer to that tells me a lot about you. But now… where do you go to get your staple clothes? That tells me even more. In your closet, it isn’t the dramatic outfits on their luxury form-fitting hangers that reveal your character as much as the rest of the stuff, hanging on wire hangers and folded up in your drawers.
And so it is that while I love the sudden thrill of finding a shop with something new and wild, I’m just as impressed when I can walk around the shop and gradually come to the conviction that, yeah, they sell just about everything and I could pretty much wear any of it quite happily.
Such a shop is Kerem Lunt’s King for Men.
Take for instance my first combination. The brown Canvas Trousers (L$145 in brown, light brown or black) have a nice earthy glow to them. They attract the eye, but are willing to yield attention back to the top, the red Argyle Sweater (L$135 in light brown, white, red, grey, green or brown; the white comes with a black shirt peeking through underneath, all the others have a white one). See what I mean, though? Wear an outfit like this and no one is going to gasp. But those with an eye, those with discernment, the ones you want to notice… they’ll notice. (more…)

Ryan : I love wearing sandals. I grew up in the U.S. Midwest, not exactly a farmboy, but still I spent more than my share of time running around barefoot. Even as an adult, at the end of my workday, the first thing that happens once I get home is the shoes come off. All summer long, I’m looking for any excuse not to wear shoes. For me, sandals are the perfect solution–they can complement any look, from completely casual to somewhat dressy. Even if I can’t be lounging on a balmy patio, awaiting the arrival of companions bearing frosty tropical drinks, my feet may well think that I am. I’ll wear sandals with pretty much anything (although, hmm, I have yet to try them with a tux). In fact, I sometimes get crap for wearing sandals when others find it stylistically inappropriate. They’re entitled to their opinions, of course, even when they’re wrong.

Sometimes when I go shopping at June Dion’s BareRose Tokyo, it makes me crazy. That could be the lag, which can be ferocious. Or it could be that I can’t walk out of there without clicking BUY at least, oh, four or five times. I usually have a folder in my inventory that contains just the last few things I picked up there, so hopefully I’ll think of them when special occasions arise, or at least remember to try them on at some point. The very existence of this folder inspired the topic (and title) of this post. I’m only surprised it took so long. I’ve had these for at least a little while, so I won’t call them “new.” I checked last night, and there are a number of more recently released designs available now, so some of these have been moved out of the New Items towers at the front of the store. Such are the productivity and prowess of June’s CS3 monkeys.
The “Galaxy Train Ride” ensemble for men makes me happy. The name alone puts a smile on my face. I mean, honestly–can you not think of a dandy gentleman boarding a steam-powered rocket train for a quick jaunt to the center of the Milky Way? And, being a gentleman, of course he’d take along some bread, cheese, fruit and wine for a nice picnic lunch. (more…)

OK, let’s just pretend that I’ve written and you’ve read a couple of paragraphs of playful banter about my being on holiday and the sun and sand on the beach. I’m too eager to cut to the chase: Look at the way the light plays on the bunched cloth! No one can do this like Shai Delacroix. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-size image.)

It was a dark and stormy night when the taxi dropped me off at the high iron gates of Miskatonic University, at Arkham, Massachusetts. The driver seemed nervously distracted and sped away quickly into the darkness after unceremoniously hurling my heavy bags to the curb, but not, I noticed, without first grimacing in apparent annoyance at the paucity of the tip I had given him. I am, after all, a struggling student—now officially so—and as a consequence I must carefully mind my budgetary expenditures. (more…)

Primitive Design is one of those stores I’ve been familiar with for quite some time, and had on my list of places to review for nearly just as long. For some reason I’ve never gotten to it however, I should blame my lack of time in the past. A few days ago the creator Geyer Schnyder gave me a full tour of the store however after a mention of Ryan - and now here I am, finally writing the review I’ve been meaning to do for ages.
The store makes items of a grungy urban/street style. They sell pretty much everything you need for a full avatar, including skins since a few days ago. The skins are only available in two white skintones however, so I can’t review them. Luckily I’ll already have my hands full enough with the clothes and accessories.
I have put two full outfits together with the store’s items, and will show those in the review. There’s so much more for sale though that you should definitely check the place out. My goal here is to give you an idea of the designer’s work in general, so I’ll try to keep it as short as I can by not spending more than a paragraph on each individual item. (more…)

So, I picked up this period suit a little while back, with a certain larger, themed article in mind. For a variety of reasons, that didn’t quite work out–it happens, unfortunately. Ever since, it’s been sitting in my inventory, waiting patiently, reminding me every so often that it’s still there, still beautiful, eager to be worn. Absent the larger article’s context, I couldn’t decide how to present it. Finally, last night, it came together in my head…with, as the song says, a little help from a friend.
DoC Eldritch’s “1846 (Blackened)” suit has a fantastic Old American West feel–I can easily see Al Swearengen wearing it just to intimidate Cy Tolliver or impress Mr. Wu, unlikely though he might be to achieve success in either endeavor. It represents true, lovingly maintained gentleman’s finery of an era when true finery might be found but rarely, and then it was quite likely to be ill cared-for and shabby. Not so here. (more…)

I wonder what it’s like inside the mind of Raven Pennyfeather? I imagine a vast, dimly lit chamber draped in heavy, dark velvet, with plush carpets underfoot. Great paned windows look out into the starry, starry night like inquisitive eyes. Scattered about are immense wooden chairs, elaborately carved and with deep upholstery, perfect for pausing to reflect on one of the many ideas that flit about quickly, glittering in the dark.
Or maybe this is just Raven’s design studio. It certainly seems that only such a place could possibly be origin to her outrageously elaborate gothic haute couture clothing designs. Her new ensemble for men is called “Dysis,” perhaps named after the Greek goddess of the hour of the sun’s setting. This would seem appropriate, perhaps on more levels than that most immediately obvious. (more…)

Just a quickie today. Who doesn’t like a quickie? Don’t lie.
OK, this is what happens when I go on vacation. I’d like to blame Express for cluttering up my inventory and hiding things while I’m out of town, but the reality is more like stuff just gets lost in the never-ending shuffle. Before I go any further, I must acknowledge that I picked this up on a tip from Posy, by which I mean that she sent me an excited IM immediately followed by a TP summons, she dragged me to the shop, and she wouldn’t let me leave until I bought one for myself. She further acknowledges that she was tipped off by Donovan, by which I expect she means that he dragged her to the shop and wouldn’t let her leave until she bought one for herself. Although it’s a few weeks old by now, I shall shamelessly call it “new,” because I only just tried it on Thursday evening. That’s my story, I’m sticking with it. (more…)

Usually I try to cover new stuff, this time I’m reviewing something a little older though. Not old as in “take out the featherduster and remove the cob-webs“, but definitely not new anymore by SL standards. I saw this gothic outfit at Schadenfreude, and felt like I absolutely had to cover it. Consider it a part of me going back to my roots. After all, when I joined Men’s Second Style, I told Ryan I wanted to bring some alternative styles into the spotlight. When I look at my previous reviews however, many of them are preppy and mainstream casual instead.
The exact outfit I’m reviewing this time is called lurking bondage pants, after the style of the pants it comes with. For the record, these pants have little to no connection with the BDSM/bondage scene, and are in real life mostly a part of musical subcultures such as goth and punk.
The top is ripped open on the chest with safety pins holding the tear together. The pants come with zippers on several locations and bolts on the calves and waist. Black straps connect these bolts. Stylised flames adorn the textures of both top and pants. There are 8 versions of the outfit, with the difference in the colour of the flames. I am reviewing the black version.

gah.. sorry for the wait… technical difficulties held this one up
A long time ago, when I was just a newbie, I would wander the grid, holding my forward arrow down and steering whenever I needed to. Needless to say, I had no life. Actually, now that think of it, I still don’t. But that’s a conversation for another time. On one of these nights of wandering, I ran into this man. He was slightly taller than me, very good looking, and dressed impeccably. I wasn’t quite sure what to say to him, so I said “hi.” He ignored me. I felt very newbish and sad. That man’s name was Lawless McBride. So now, one year later, I found him again and told him: “You may have snubbed me a year ago but I was weak and inexperienced… now I’m ready to face you again. I challenge you to a style throwdown!” (more…)

If you’ve been searching for the perfect casual wardrobe for summer, you may need look no further than Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul. I didn’t know what to expect when I made my first visit to meriwell’s shop, but the clean designs and gelato-bar color palette brought back memories of Don Johnson in “Miami Vice.” In the best possible way, of course!
I’ll start with simple and classic. The Threads Button Tee (L$100) has a button-up front, collar and chest logo, so for my money it’s more polo than tee. I’m not going to quibble, though. It’s available in a handful of colors, and shown here in Green and White. Here and throughout I’m also wearing meriwell’s Light Linen Trousers (L$100). The fabric has a delicate crosshatch texture, and meriwell mentioned that he left off the side seam because he preferred the softer, casual feel that provided. Three styles are included: belted, unbelted, and tapered at the ankle for wear with sculpted cuffs. (more…)

So, here’s a funny thing. I didn’t know the theme of the upcoming Style Throwdown when I picked up these designs and decided to make them my next feature. Am I picking up on a psychic wavelength? Is it something in the water? I don’t want to spoil anything or steal thunder from Express and Lawless, so let’s just say I’m thematically consistent and consider this a companion piece, shall we?
“Su’an Assassin” (L$200 L$400) by Madlax Stygian is a fairly elaborate fantasy/roleplay ensemble that comes complete with scripted weapons. The set includes black leggings with prim side pouches and rolled cuffs, prim obi and prim Geta shoes (close-up). The leggings come in two styles: the longer style shown here and a shorter “capri” style, presumably for women. The legging cuffs and shoes are detailed with flexi string ties, and the prim side pockets can be worn with or without the pictured “shard” knives. Also included is a sword, the Su’an blade. The weapons are scripted for combat], complete with “draw” animations, sound effects and animated stances (blade, knives). Notecards are included with info on the weapons scripting. I’m not into combat RP and didn’t try the weapons out in that setting, but the animations and sound effects are very cool indeed. (more…)

So about a month ago I had this great idea for a new type of post on the site. I thought it was a cool idea, but experience has told me that what I think is a good idea usually isn’t. So I went around and asked a bunch of people if they thought it was a good idea. Now, they were probably lying, but they said it was a great idea. But then, one night, I threw my pitch at a friend and instead of saying it was a great idea, he said it was an awesome idea. And then he proceeded to tell me what he understood of the idea, which was nearly nothing. On the other hand, his interpretation, a similar but rather different idea was in my eyes a much better one. So, with his blessing, I’m stealing his idea. (more…)

“If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.” — Roy Batty
I’ve had this idea kicking around in my head for some time now, but I was never really sure how to make it work or even if I could pull it off, close-up photography of avatar details being the challenge that it is. But it kept nagging at me, and I kept worrying it over, and finally I thought, “Well, maybe.” So here we are. Of course there’s also the question of how useful it will be to you, The Reader. You’ll have to be the judge of that.
Cliché: The eyes are windows to the soul. (Do SL avatars have souls? Maybe on the other side of the keyboard. That’s probably a discussion for another time.) Truth, subjective though it may be: The eyes are, or at least are perceived as, the outward expression of something inner, and definitely affect our perception of others. These are some of the eye designs that have become my favorites over time. Any one of these designers has more eyes than I can feature here, some of them vastly so. This brief overview is intended to do no more than give you a closer look at some of my personal favorites. (more…)

At some of his club gigs lately, my friend Kaj has been wearing some intriguing and unfamiliar jeans and shirts–detailed design work, rich colors skewing to the dark side, goth influences but nothing heavy-handed. He was kind enough to put me in touch with the designer, VincentTalent Maximus, whose work was new to me. Vince’s “2di4″ collection so far isn’t extensive, but it’s well executed, beautifully artistic and growing. We were able to beat our schedules into submission and make time for an inworld chat, so in addition to my usual blather you’ll be hearing from Vincent himself regarding his design work.
“Right now I’m experimenting with a few things,” Vince says. “I’m really into goth influences (not hard core), spend lots of time listening to dark ambient music, things like the Legendary Pink Dots. [I] love Tim Burton and the lighter side of dark. Vampires are great, but they should be sexy!” I find myself in agreement with the sexy vampires idea. After all, they’re not just Max Schreck. I just looked in the archives, and realised my last post was made on the 4th of February. My apologies to Ryan and to the readers. Early February, real life took a turn for me, and I’m still unwinding from it. I plan to return to my old schedule though and post at the least once a week.
One of the things that changed in this 5 month period is that Lissa Maerten’s Cattivo stopped existing and got absorbed into Style Starts Here - in cooperation with Simone Designs. A short while ago I had the pleasure of receiving a few copies of one of the outfits released under this new label. From what I’ve seen so far, this place definitely deserves its name.
The outfit I’ll be reviewing is the D2K Outfit, where D2K stands for “Dressed to Kill“. The outfit consists of a blazer, a tee shirt and a pair of jeans. The jacket is available in eight different colours. These are Navy, Olive, Slate, Copper, Khaki, Desert, Light Blue and Light Gray.

I love hair.
That’s probably not news to you. After all, you see me here (and inworld, if you happen to bump into me or, hmm, stalk me down) wearing new or at least different hairstyles with frightening regularity. Oh, sure, I have a few favorites that I keep going back to (*cough* “Nekoge” *cough*), but who doesn’t? Hey, I’ve been giving “Poynter” a break lately, so give me some credit there.
It’s been a few weeks by now, but Kavar Cleanslate recently updated and expanded his collection of men’s hairstyles at Exile. (The update includes all-new hair textures–more on that later.) His new styles are available in 30 different shades, packaged in packs of six. Four of the packs contain natural shades: Blacks, Blondes, Browns and Reds. (All styles are shown here in Scarlet, one of the Reds.) The fifth pack is appropriately called Wild Cards as it contains a selection of brighter, less natural colors. The sixth pack is K’s Choice, and it includes a selection of five from Kavar’s naturals and one of the wilder shades. (more…)

So much for putting up more than one post while I was away on vacation. It seems there’s never quite as much “spare time” as I think there will be. What is up with that? I had good intentions, but you know what they say…the road to hell and all that.
I learned about the new Urban Tactic boots by Tesla Miles just before leaving on a jet plane, almost literally at the 11th hour. Although I took these pictures the night before I left and carefully stashed them on my handy-dandy USB drive, I never got any further than sorting and cropping them. No actual writing took place, and don’t get me started on the internet access problem. Why do hotels charge for wi-fi? Because they can, I suppose. And I’m lazy, not to mention cheap, so rare indeed were the times when I toted my laptop down the block to the bar that offered free wi-fi–and excellent Bloody Marys and Red Snappers, I might add. Well hey now…I was on vacation, after all.

It was Ryan who last mentioned Yukimaru Koba’s Z#road shop, back in January. He was reviewing some skins. I found myself in the shop for the first time this week and it was the blazers that impressed me. I think the best of the lot is the dark blue blazer with matching trousers. It’s one of the sharpest suits I own now. The fabric is so soft and comfortable. Some suits in SL are all perfect creases and smooth, straight lines, and some SL suits have wrinkles that have become permanent creases. The Z#road blazers and trousers are marvelously in the middle. There are some sharp creases in the right places, and no creases in the wrong places, but other than that, this almost liquid feel — it ripples rather than wrinkles. And I love it.
The red jacket is pale, almost salmon, and clearly on the ’strong’ side of the border with pastel. The trousers that come with it are called white, but in fact they are more eggshell off-white. The debonair cheerfulness of this bright outfit (more…)

A little while back, Posy was lamenting that she hadn’t done any new design work for Miau Haus in what she thought was far too long. The next thing I knew she was asking, “Are these shirts sexy enough?” Well, now, let me just take a look.
Yes…yes, I think they might be. Break out your favorite skin with a treasure trail, because you’re going to need it.
Posy’s new “Seiki” shirts are devilishly disheveled and come in bright White and deep Black. With each you get a jacket-layer shirt (untucked only, natch), prim collars with and without flexi nectkie, and scrunched, turned-up sculptie sleeves. The shirt’s fabric weave is clear and easy to make out, even on the Black shirt, and finishing details include heavy rather than fine stitchwork and color-matched buttons. (more…)
